PRESS RELEASE: Hit & Run on Cotton Rd

PRESS RELEASE UPDATE 10/12/23:

Chesterfield Township Police Detectives developed a suspect in the fatal Hit and Run traffic crash that occurred in the early morning hours of Aug 29, 2023. The suspect has been cooperating with the police department from the beginning of this investigation.

He is identified as 25 year old Shane Flaherty of Chesterfield Township. He was arraigned this afternoon at the 42-2 District Court located in New Baltimore. Mr. Flaherty has been charged with the 15 year felony of Failure To Stop At The Scene Of Accident – When At Fault – Resulting In Death. Mr. Flaherty is currently out on a $10,000 personal bond awaiting further court proceedings.

UPDATE 09/05/2023:

The Chesterfield Township Police Department has developed a suspect in this fatal hit and run investigation. The suspect is cooperating with the investigators. Criminal charges are being organized and the case will be presented to the Macomb County Prosecutors Office later this week. We would like to thank the public for getting involved with their many telephone calls and e-mails.

Chesterfield Township Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Cotton Rd near the I-94 overpass this morning at 6:46 AM on the report of a male lying in a grass area adjacent to Cotton Rd. On arrival, responding officers discovered the man to be deceased. The Chesterfield Township Police Detective Bureau and Crash Investigators were called to the scene to further the investigation.


The deceased is a 42 year-old Chesterfield Township resident. His family has been notified of his death and are very upset about the news. The Chesterfield Township Police Investigators are currently devoting much time on this case. We are currently investigating this as a hit and run traffic crash. This tragic crash happened on Cotton Rd west of the I-94 overpass sometime between 11:30 PM on Monday Aug 28th, 2023 through today at 6:46 AM.


The initial investigation is showing the vehicle involved in this hit and run as a black 2017–2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The suspect Jeep will have crash damage to the right / passenger side headlight and turn signal area.
