Detective Bureau
Criminal InvestigationsThe Detective Bureau investigates adult and juvenile crimes, secures evidence and prepares cases for the township attorney and county prosecutor.
About the Detective Bureau
The Detective Bureau is under the supervision of the Detective Sergeant and is staffed by an administrative assistant and four investigators. Detectives are specially trained in gathering and assessing crime-related information, interviewing suspects and witnesses, and the physical investigation and processing of crime scenes to identify, collect and preserve evidence.
The bureau is supplemented by detectives assigned to an FBI task force and a Michigan State Police drug task force. It often acts as the department's liaison to federal, state, county and other local police agencies, and works closely with the Chesterfield Township attorney, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, the 42-2 District Court and the 16th Judicial Circuit Court.
In 2025 the Detective Bureau handled 2,934 cases, up from 2,334 the year before. Detectives requested 944 warrants and 753 were authorized, and petitions held steady at six requested in each year. The rise in caseload came without adding investigators and tracks the increase in calls for service across the township, since many cases begin as patrol reports that are assigned to a detective for follow-up.
Detectives primarily work Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and can be reached directly at (586) 949-2450 during those hours. A detective is available 24 hours a day on a rotating weekly on-call schedule, so a serious crime at any hour gets an investigator on scene.

Task Force Assignments
Beyond the four investigators assigned to township cases, the department places detectives with an FBI task force and a Michigan State Police drug task force. The department also contributes officers to the County of Macomb Enforcement Team, the F.A.N.T.O.M. DEA task force and the Macomb Auto Theft Squad.
