Report a Sexual Assault

How Do I

You can report a sexual assault at any time, in the way that feels right for you. Detectives, medical care and the HAVEN 24-hour crisis line are all available.

Reporting a sexual assault is a deeply personal decision. The Chesterfield Township Police Department is committed to treating every survivor with compassion, dignity and respect. You have choices about how and when to report, and you will be supported at every step. Reporting does not commit you to any particular outcome, and investigators move at your pace.

You can report at any time, even if the assault happened long ago. Evidence collection is most effective within 72 hours, but an investigation can begin whenever you are ready. You also do not need to file a police report to receive medical care or to speak with a crisis advocate.

Step by Step

  1. If You Are in Danger or It Just Happened, Call 911

Officers will be dispatched and can connect you with medical care and support services right away.

  2. To Speak with an Officer About a Past Assault, Call the Non-Emergency Line

Call (586) 949-2322 and ask to speak with an officer. You can choose to meet at the station or another location.

  3. Seek Medical Attention

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) can provide medical care and collect forensic evidence. You do not need to file a police report to be seen.

  4. Preserve Evidence if You Can

If possible, avoid bathing, changing clothes or disturbing the scene before a medical evaluation. If you already have, you can still report.

  5. Work with a Detective

Your case will be assigned to a detective who will explain the process, answer questions and guide the investigation at your pace.

  6. Reach Out for Crisis Support

HAVEN's 24-hour crisis line at (248) 334-1274 offers confidential support and advocacy whether or not you decide to report.
