Police Officer
Sworn officers serve on patrol and can move into the Detective Bureau, Traffic Unit, K-9, School Resource Officer, evidence technician, Marine One, drone and Honor Guard assignments. Field training runs through a structured FTO program.
Minimum Requirements
- MCOLES certified or certifiable, or currently enrolled in a police academy
- United States citizen with a valid Michigan driver's license
- High school diploma or GED; college credit preferred
- Successful background investigation, psychological and medical exams
- No felony convictions
Public Safety Dispatcher
Dispatchers answer 911 and non-emergency calls for Chesterfield Township and New Baltimore police and fire, 24 hours a day. New hires complete the Communication Training Officer program including 40 hours of Emergency Medical Dispatch training.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to type accurately while handling radio and phone traffic
- Willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule
- Successful background investigation and skills assessment
Cadet / Public Service Aide
Part-time cadets are college students considering a law enforcement career. Cadets take lobby reports, complete private property accident reports and conduct property checks, and many have gone on to become Chesterfield officers.
Minimum Requirements
- At least 18 years old with a high school diploma
- Enrolled in an accredited college
- Valid driver's license and good moral character
- Successful background check

Attend a Recruiting or Information Session
The department holds recruiting and informational events for officers, cadets and firefighters each year. Dates are announced on the News page and on the department Facebook page.
Background Investigation
Candidates who move forward receive the current background questionnaire from the department and complete an interview, followed by physical and psychological evaluations for sworn positions.
Training
New officers complete the Field Training Officer program. New dispatchers complete the Communication Training Officer program with Emergency Medical Dispatch certification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be MCOLES certified to apply as a police officer?
Certified and certifiable candidates are both considered, and the department has sponsored cadets through the police academy with MCOLES assistance grants. Ask about academy sponsorship when you apply.
Is the cadet position full time?
No. Cadets work part time while enrolled in college. The program was created in 2022 as a path into a full-time police career, and seven cadets have since become Chesterfield officers.
