Chesterfield Police Department

Request a Background Check

How Do I

Find the right background check for employment, licensing or volunteer work: Michigan ICHAT online, FBI checks through your agency, or ink fingerprint cards here.

Background checks for employment, licensing, volunteer work, adoption and similar purposes may involve local, state or federal records, and each is handled differently. The Chesterfield Township Police Department assists with local inquiries and ink fingerprint cards through the Records Department. State criminal history checks are run online through the Michigan State Police ICHAT service.

Most requesting agencies specify exactly which check they need and how it must be submitted, so start with their instructions. If fingerprints are required, note that the department provides ink fingerprint cards only, for Chesterfield Township residents, and does not offer Livescan electronic fingerprinting.

Step by Step

  1. Find Out Which Check You Need

Ask the employer, licensing board or organization whether they need a local record inquiry, a Michigan criminal history check (ICHAT) or a federal FBI check. Their instructions determine the next step.

  2. For a Michigan Check, Use ICHAT

The Michigan State Police Internet Criminal History Access Tool lets you request a state criminal history record online without visiting the department.

  3. For a Fingerprint-Based Check, Bring Your Cards to Records

Chesterfield Township residents can have ink fingerprint cards completed at the Records window for $5.00 per card. Bring the cards your agency supplied and proof of residency. See the Fingerprinting page for details.

  4. For a Local Record Inquiry, Call Records

Call the Records Department at (586) 949-2112 to explain what you need. Staff can tell you what local records may be available and whether a FOIA request is required.
