Submit a FOIA Request
How Do IRequest police reports, crash reports and other public records in writing by email or at the Records window. Responses are due within 5 business days.
Michigan's Freedom of Information Act gives the public the right to inspect or obtain copies of public records maintained by the Chesterfield Township Police Department. Requests must be made in writing and are processed by the Records Department. Common requests include police incident reports, traffic crash reports and other documentation the department generates.
The department responds within 5 business days, with an extension allowed under Michigan law when a request needs more time. You will be told of any estimated cost before records are released. The Records Department processed 272 FOIA requests in 2025.
Step by Step
Write Your Request
Describe the specific records clearly enough for Records staff to find them: dates, a case or report number if you know it, names or addresses involved, and the format you prefer. Include your full name, date of birth, current address, phone number and email so staff can reach you if the request needs clarifying. No specific form is required, but the FOIA Request form covers every item.
Submit It by Email, Mail, Fax or in Person
Email the written request to foia@chesterfieldpolice.org, mail it to Chesterfield Police Department Records, 46525 Continental Drive, Chesterfield, MI 48047, fax it to (586) 598-2536, or bring it to the Records window during public hours.
Wait for the Response
The department will grant, deny or partially grant the request within 5 business days, or send an extension notice that allows up to 10 more business days to search for the records.
Pay Any Fees and Receive the Records
If a fee applies you will receive an estimate first. Once it is paid, records are delivered on paper or electronically as you requested.
