Chesterfield Police Department

FOIA Request

Forms and Documents

Request copies of police reports, crash reports and other public records from the Records Department under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act.

The Michigan Freedom of Information Act gives the public the right to inspect or receive copies of public records maintained by government bodies, including the Chesterfield Township Police Department. Requests must be made in writing and are processed by the Records Department. Common requests include police incident reports, traffic crash reports and other documentation generated by the department. In 2025, the Records Department processed 272 FOIA requests.

Michigan law requires the department to respond within five business days, with an allowable extension when a request needs more time. The department may charge reasonable fees to fulfill a request, including staff time spent searching for, examining and preparing records, plus the cost of copying or electronic delivery. You will be notified of any estimated cost before records are released.

The request form lets you ask for a copy, a certified copy, an inspection of the record, or a subscription to a record issued on a regular basis. You may choose to pick up your records, or have them mailed or emailed to the address you provide. Some items, such as body worn camera video, dash camera video, 911 audio, photos and booking video, may carry extra fees.
