Firearm Purchase Permit
Forms and DocumentsApply in person at the Records Department for a Michigan license to purchase a firearm. A $5.00 notary fee applies and same-day processing is not guaranteed.
Permits are required for all firearm purchases in Michigan, with exceptions for holders of a valid Concealed Pistol License, Federal Firearms License or MCOLES card. Applications are processed by the Records Department at the Chesterfield Township Police Department and are accepted in person only, Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Wednesday until 4:00 PM. There is no mail-in or online processing. In 2025, Records issued 974 pistol purchase permits.
A $5.00 notary fee is due at the time of processing. Cash, check and credit card are accepted, and credit card payments carry a small processing fee. Same-day processing is not guaranteed, so plan for the visit to take between 30 minutes and one hour. You may download the application ahead of time to review and complete it, but it must be submitted and notarized in person at the department.
A license to purchase a pistol expires 30 calendar days after the date of issue. If the license is used to buy a pistol, the licensing authority copy must be returned to Records within 10 calendar days of the purchase. Failure to follow state and federal regulations may result in confiscation of the pistol and criminal liability.
