SUSPECT: Shane Anthony McCann, a 30 year old male from Chesterfield Township.
On Friday January 1st, 2016, at approximately 8:00am, Chesterfield Township Officers responded to a home in the 28400 block of Clover where the residents reported discovering that their home had been burglarized and their car had been stolen while they were in the home sleeping. Upon their arrival, Officers determined that an unknown suspect had forced open the side door to the garage and then entered the home through the door that leads from the garage into the home. Once inside the home the suspect apparently searched through several areas of the first floor, including the family’s refrigerator. At some point the suspect discovered the keys to the family’s 2013 Ford Edge and fled the burglary in the Ford, taking a woman’s purse and I-phone 4s from the kitchen counter. While backing out of the homeowner’s garage it was apparent that the suspect had struck the side wall of the garage.
An Officer at the scene used the family’s computer and accessed the “Find My I-Phone” application in an attempt to locate the current location of the woman’s stolen I-Phone. Officers obtained information that the phone was located in an apartment building in the 47100 block of Jefferson, in Chesterfield Township. Officers made this location and immediately located the family’s Ford Edge in the parking lot for the apartments. Officers entered the apartment’s common hallway and began sending alerts to the stolen phone. The audible alert sounding from the stolen phone enabled Officers to pinpoint an individual apartment that housed the stolen property. Officers could hear persons moving around inside the apartment, but the suspect refused to answer the door, Officers entered the apartment. Officers located Shane McCann in a rear bedroom and located the stolen phone on the bed next to him. While taking custody of Mr. McCann, Officers located stolen credit cards from the woman’s purse in Mr. McCann’s pants pocket. Shane McCann was arrested and conveyed to the Chesterfield Police Department and Investigators were called in to prepare a search warrant for the apartment in an attempt to locate any additional stolen property. During the execution of the search warrant, Officers located several other stolen items from the Clover home, including credit cards, cash, a phone charger, and personal identification, all stashed about the rear bedroom where Mr. McCann was arrested.
During a subsequent interview with Detectives, Mr. McCann claimed to not remember what he had done the evening prior, stating that he could only recall taking “acid” and drinking at a local bar’s New Year’s Eve party, and then beginning to walk home at 4:00am.
After review by the Macomb County Prosecutors Office Mr. McCann was charged with: Home Invasion 1st Degree (20 year felony), Motor Vehicle-Unlawful Driving Away (5 year felony), and Larceny In A Building (4 year felony). He was arraigned this afternoon at the 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore via video from the Macomb County Jail. His bond was set at $50,000.00 cash surety.
