SUSPECT: Derrick Lamar BROWN, a 33 year old male from Detroit
LOCATION: 36400 block of Brennan Rd., New Baltimore MI
On Tuesday morning (11-24-15), at approximately 2:50 am, a female resident on Brennan Street in New Baltimore called the Chesterfield Dispatch Center to report that while she was up feeding her two month old child, she looked outside and observed an unknown black male removing the tires and wheels from her family’s 2016 Ford Explorer that was parked in the driveway. The resident added that it appeared the suspect was loading the tires into a large dark colored pick-up. New Baltimore PD units were dispatched to the area and approached the residence on foot. As they neared the home they observed the suspect inside the cab of a 2001 Ford F-250 pick-up. They illuminated the suspect’s vehicle, observing the bed of the truck to be filled with the victims tires and wheels, and ordered him to exit. The suspect refused to comply and began fleeing down the residential streets and across lawns with New Baltimore PD units in pursuit. The suspect ultimately entered west bound I-94 from New Haven Rd., where Chesterfield PD units were positioned to assist. As the suspect continued fleeing west bound on I-94 (approaching 23 Mile Road with multiple police units in tow), a Chesterfield Officer deployed “stop-sticks” and successfully deflated tires on the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect now struggled to control the vehicle and exited at 21 Mile Road. He then entered the Briartowne Subdivision and was temporarily cornered on a dead end, but ultimately drove across the front lawns, crashed into the front end of a Chesterfield patrol car, and continued fleeing back onto 21 Mile Road east bound. The suspect, with a now severely disabled vehicle, crashed into a brick wall (along a residential drive way) as he crossed over Jefferson on east bound 21 Mile Road. The suspect then bailed out of his vehicle and fled on foot in between the homes with multiple Officers giving chase.
A Chesterfield Officer took the suspect into custody after the brief foot pursuit, and without further incident. After attempts by the suspect to supply the Officers with fictitious names, they positively identified him as Derrick Lamar Brown, a 33 year old Parolee from Detroit MI. Back at the scene of his crash they determined the 2001 Ford F-250 that he had been driving was reported stolen from Sterling Heights in October (2015). Derrick Brown refused to speak with investigators while being held at the Chesterfield Police Department.
After review today by the Macomb County Prosecutors Office, Mr. Brown was charged with: “Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer-Second Degree” (10 Year Felony), “Receiving and Concealing a Stolen Motor Vehicle” (5 Year Felony), “Larceny from a Motor Vehicle” (5 Year Felony), and “Operating with Suspended License” (93 Day Misdemeanor).
He was arraigned this afternoon in the 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore via video from the Chesterfield Township Police Department. His bond was set at $20,000.00 cash and he is currently housed at the Macomb County Jail with a parole detainer accompanying his cash bond.
