Victim: James Meredith Weir, a 69 year old man from Lexington Michigan.
On Saturday (July 23rd), at approximately 11:50am, A Chesterfield Township Officer on patrol drove upon an accident that had just occurred at 22 Mile Road and Gratiot. The investigation at the scene revealed that Mr. James Weir (Driving a 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle and wearing a helmet) was stopped southbound on Gratiot at 22 Mile Road for a red light. He was struck from behind by a 43 year old New Haven woman (driving a Pontiac G6) that told Officers she did not realize the vehicles in front of her were stopped for the light until it was too late to stop. The impact sent Mr. Weir forward and into a Chevy Trailblazer that was also stopped for the red light in front of him. Mr. Weir was thrown from his motorcycle, but was conscious at the scene and able to give Officers his account of what happened. Mr. Weir was conveyed to McLaren Macomb Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased during surgery to repair his internal injuries. The other drivers involved received no serious injuries and alcohol/drugs do not appear to be a factor.
The investigation is ongoing at this time and anyone who may have witnessed the accident is urged to call Detective Chris Delor at 586-949-3375.
