Police Chase Ends in Arrest

A Chesterfield Township Police Officer discovered a vehicle traveling on Gratiot Ave. near 21 Mile Rd without a license plate at 2:28 in the morning on Aug. 11, 2020.  The driver of the 2003 Chevy Impala ignored the emergency lights of the fully marked patrol car after an attempted traffic stop.  The driver (later identified as a 31 year old male from Davison, MI) then fled at excessive speeds southbound on Gratiot Ave.

The Chesterfield Officer pursued the male into Clinton Twp, as he ignored red traffic lights and continued to flee at high speeds. A cement curb was struck by the fleeing driver which blew out a front tire, and caused car parts to fall from the Chevy. The pursuit lead to westbound Wendell St. in Clinton Township, to northbound Groesbeck Highway with sparks flying from the car.  The male continued fleeing at excessive speeds and ignoring traffic lights up North Ave, then turning eastbound on 23 Mile Rd heading back into Chesterfield Township.

The pursuit continued into the Meijer parking lot at 23 Mile Rd. and Gratiot Ave. The driver attempted to avoid officers, recklessly driving through the Meijer lot and across Gratiot into the Little Caesar’s pizza parking lot – jumping a curbed and landscaped island with the Chevy.

The pursuit came to and end and the male jumped from the Chevy and fled from officers on foot.  The male continued to flee and was soon captured in a grassy area near the Burger King on 23 Mile Rd. without incident.  A 21 year old white female from Lapeer, MI. was also taken into custody as she stepped out of the car. It was later discovered she had misdemeanor warrants out of Lapeer County.

The female was later released from the Chesterfield Police Dept without new criminal charges. The male is currently being held at the Chesterfield Police Department. He is charged with Felony Flee and Elude, Misdemeanor Operating Under The Influence of Drugs, and Misdemeanor Transport Open Intoxicants. He will be arraigned at 42-2 District Court Wednesday Aug. 12, 2020.

The pursuit lasted 13 minutes and covered almost 18 miles.
